PIRATES, PIRATES, PIRATES
Selected by Phyllis R. Fenner

An illustrated anthology of pirate and privateer stories, bringing together tales of cutlasses, corsairs, buried treasure, buccaneers, ships, and swashbucklers.

Selected by noted children’s anthologist Phyllis R. Fenner and illustrated by Manning de V. Lee, the collection includes stories by Howard Pyle, Armstrong Sperry, Stephen W. Meader, Rupert Sargent Holland, Anne Malcolmson, and other writers. The contents include accounts of Blackbeard, privateers, mutineers, treasure seekers, and maritime adventure.

The copyright page bears a sole 1951 copyright notice with no later printing identified. This copy is therefore described conservatively as a presumed first edition and first printing, pending confirmation from the title page.

CONDITION

Very Good overall, lacking the dust jacket.

The original red cloth boards show light rubbing, faint surface marks, mild uneven fading, and minor shelf wear. The front board retains a clear black illustration of a sword-wielding pirate. The corners show light bumping and rubbing, with slightly greater wear at the upper-right corner. The rear board is plain and has light handling marks.

The photographed copyright and acknowledgments page is clean and clearly legible, with mild age toning and a few small scattered marks. No signature, inscription, bookplate, or ownership marking is visible in the supplied photographs.

The spine, title page, page edges, endpapers, hinges, illustrated plates, and complete interior were not photographed and cannot be fully assessed. No dust jacket.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE

An attractive early edition of a less commonly encountered mid-century pirate anthology. The red pictorial cloth binding and illustrations by Manning de V. Lee give the volume decorative appeal even without its original jacket. The collection includes fourteen stories and was issued as part of Franklin Watts’s group of themed “triple title” anthologies.
